Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana (BACH) announces the Young Baroque Artists Competition for high-school age students.

The Young Baroque Artists Competition (YBAC) is an opportunity for high-school-age students studying baroque music to win a cash prize and perform at a BACH concert.

The competition is open to anyone who will be 13 to 18 years of age on March 24, 2007, and who is not yet attending college.

Candidates should prepare one or more pieces or movements composed between 1600 and 1750, totaling 5 to 10 minutes in length. Vocal music must be memorized.

Pieces must be approved in advance by the Competition Committee. The music must normally be sung by the type of voice or played on the instrument for which it was composed, except that piano may be substituted for harpsichord or for orchestral accompaniment. If an accompanist is needed, the candidate will be expected to provide one.

Ensemble groups of two or more soloists may also enter.

There is a $10 application fee for each entry. Applications must be signed by the candidate’s teacher or ensemble coach.
